Chelsea Reach Champions League Semis on Penalties
Blues Edge Lyon in Tense Encounter
Match Report
Chelsea Women have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Olympique Lyon on Thursday evening. The match ended 2-2 after extra time, with Maren Mjelde equalising from the spot late on for Chelsea.
Lyon had taken the lead through Melvine Gilles in the first half before Sophia Dabritz put the visitors ahead again in extra time. However, Chelsea refused to give up and Mjelde's penalty forced the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, Chelsea goalkeeper Teagan Micah made two crucial saves to give her team the advantage. Guro Reiten, Jessie Fleming, Pernille Harder and Erin Cuthbert all converted their spot-kicks for Chelsea, while only Wendie Renard scored for Lyon.
The result sees Chelsea reach the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League for the first time since 2019. They will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the last four.
