Mayorkas Impeachment Trial Set to Commence
All 100 Senators to be Sworn In as Jurors
Trial to Begin at 1:00 PM
Washington, D.C. - The impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is scheduled to begin today at 1:00 PM in the United States Senate. All 100 senators will be sworn in as jurors in the trial, which is expected to last several weeks.
House impeachment managers previewed some of their arguments at a hearing with Mayorkas on Tuesday morning. They allege that Mayorkas has violated the law by failing to secure the border and by allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country.
Mayorkas has denied the allegations and has said that he is confident that he will be acquitted in the trial. He has also said that he believes the impeachment is politically motivated.
The trial will be presided over by Chief Justice John Roberts. The Senate will vote on whether to convict Mayorkas after the trial concludes. A two-thirds majority vote is required to convict.
