Germany inks $9B deal to buy Chinook choppers

Multi-billion dollar purchase bolsters defense and boosts Boeing sales

Boeing wins major defense contract from Germany

BERLIN, Germany -- The German government has signed a $9 billion contract with Boeing to purchase 60 CH-47 Chinook helicopters, a major defense acquisition that will bolster the country's military capabilities and provide a significant boost to Boeing's sales.

The deal, which was approved by the German parliament, includes the purchase of 45 new-build CH-47F Chinooks and 15 remanufactured CH-47s from Boeing's production facilities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The CH-47 Chinook is a heavy-lift helicopter that has been used by the U.S. military and its allies for decades. It is designed for transporting troops, equipment, and supplies in a variety of combat and humanitarian operations.

The German government said the purchase of the Chinooks was necessary to modernize its aging fleet of helicopters and to meet the country's growing defense needs. The new helicopters will be used by the German army and air force to support a range of missions, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and search and rescue operations.

For Boeing, the deal is a major victory and will provide a significant boost to its sales. The company has been facing declining orders for its commercial aircraft due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinook sale will help to offset some of those losses and provide a much-needed cash infusion for Boeing.
